The Resilience Pyramid

The performance of a group, team or organization can be observed at various levels, each of which represents a different dimension with its own theories, measures, models and standards. The better the group performs at each of these levels, the more resilience it has. Although this article relates these levels to group functioning, the model can also be applied to individuals.

Task level: Every group or organization has certain key tasks that it must perform in order to survive - making products, providing services, keeping accounts, paying wages. High performing organizations have become very good at doing these things, and we have come to expect a high level of reliability. Unfortunately, success at the task level is not enough.

Relationship level: While the task level can be made ever more efficient, organizations are made up of people, and people need more than tasks to perform. They have social needs and develop relationships, they need purpose and meaning. Organizations are in the business of relationships, and the more positive those relationships are the better.

Creative level: Whereas tasks and relationships can sustain that which already exists, creativity is about bringing new products and services into existence. This is becoming more pressing, as existing concepts and designs are quickly copied and overtaken, or made obsolete by the rapidly changing technical environment. Organizations that do not foster creativity must inevitably decline.

Field level: This level is more abstract - the forces influencing events are difficult to detect but nevertheless powerful. In literature it is the Zeitgeist – the spirit of the age. Successful entrepreneurs who tap into this can be described as “riding the crest of the wave”, their products "go viral" and there is a level of abundance that can never be achieved through hard work alone.
