Myths about resilience

These are some of the common statements we hear when we start working with a new company:

‘I'm not stressed’
This is undoubtedly the trickiest of all: who are we to tell someone that they need to come along and receive coaching and training when they feel fine? In truth, resilience is not the absence of stress - it is something much more. To watch a short video on what makes resilience, please click here .

‘Is this more positive thinking nonsense?’
It’s fair to say that positive psychology receives a bad press. And whilst we won’t deny that ‘positive thinking’ is an integral component of ‘resilient thinking’, our programme teaches that the two are certainly not one and the same. Sometimes the resilient thing is to say no, or get out. Instead, we’re advocating balance – that with an open minded approach there is most often a positive to be found in a situation, whilst acknowledging that a ‘gung-ho’ approach to positivity is not beneficial in the long run. 

It’s all pink and fluffy / psychobabble 
When we launched The Resilience Programme, we began to use the strapline ‘founded in science, grounded in experience’. We’ve gone to great lengths to build the programme upon the foundations laid by biology and more recently neuroscience. In addition, our small but perfectly formed team of 3 bring not just training and qualifications, but rich personal journey’s which have all involved a significant amount of resilient thinking to overcome personal adversity. 

‘You’re going to make us work harder’
We often find that individuals are worried that they are going to be taught how to withstand more and more pressure, and that because of the resilience training they won’t be able to say ‘No’. Whilst we teach that resilience is certainly about being able to deal with life’s pressures, we are keen to dispel the idea that resilience has to equal toughness.  
On one occasion, this myth turned out to be entirely plausible. As the workshop progressed we realised that Nick (not his real name), was looking for one single tool or technique that would help him to motivate his team to work a 12 hour day without complaint. It’s no wonder his team were worried about resilience training!
