Internal locus of control
Locus of control refers to the extent that people believe they can influence the events that affect them. As an example, a person with a high internal locus of control - when receiving the results of a recent exam - would take responsibility for the grade whether it was a pass or fail. A person with a low level locus of control would tend to blame the teacher, lecturer or examining body if the grade did not meet with their expectations. Developing a higher internal locus of control can help you to feel more in control of your life, so that you have the sense that you can have a positive effect on the areas of your life that you want to improve upon.
- Challenge your thinking. Stop using words like "can't" "ought" "should" "we" and "you", and start using words like "want to" "choose to" and most importantly "I".
- Positive reappraisal / reframing techniques (looking for new interpretations to view situations in a less negative light) - focus on values/goals/beliefs elicited by stressful situations, rather than denial or repression.
- Set performance-oriented goals rather than outcome-oriented goals as this will increase your sense of control and provide you with more satisfaction.
