It is only from this perspective and with honesty can we make positive significant changes.

Get Rid of Any Baggage

Last month in the April edition of the Hope Street Newsletter we looked at the first of the ‘5 Top Musts’ which was about becoming moreSelf Aware. When we get motivated enough to change something we are unhappy with it gives us the courage to take off our rose tinted spectacles, take our head out of the sand and take a closer look at why we are where we are today. It is only from this perspective and with honesty can we make positive significant changes.

What is interesting is that what we may also discover is that we are carrying some or a lot of ‘baggage’. This is issues, negative beliefs and old programming that doesn’t serve us now.

Imagine you are a car. To run efficiently and get to your destination you need certain things to be in place. You need quality fuel, (good nutrition) regular servicing, (physical and mental check up’s) you need a Sat Nav, maps or compasses, (the tools to get you to where you want to be in life) and you ABSOLUTELY need to know where you want to end up, (your dreams and goals in life.)

The challenge a lot of us fsce is to set out on our journey and soon end up wondering why the car isn’t as fast as it should be or running on all cylinders. This is where we need to take a look in the boot! If you, like many people are hanging on to things from the past, these are subconsciously weighing down the car [yourself] and draining your energy.

Often I see people who are driving around in 5th gear through a 30 mile per hour zone and running on ‘empty’. By the time these drivers have walked through the door of The Hope Street Centre the Therapists/Coach is usually dealing with a crash. The time to deal with our mental challenges is before it gets to this stage.

I understand clearly why this is happening as our western society in this 21st century expects so much more from us in terms of output and standards. So what can we do about it?

 ACTION 1 - ‘Park the Car’

Decide to regularly park the car, (time out to just ‘be’ rather than ‘do’, admire the scenery, the moment and what you DO have to feel good about. This is giving yourself great opportunity to repair, refuel and re-energise your body, mind and spirit. Many of my clients come to me wondering why they are so tired and exhausted and not really enjoying the journey they are on. The first thing I do is work on their Self-Awareness and secondly I help them release the negative baggage so that their vehicle to move forward and achieve happiness is much lighter.

ACTION 2 - ‘Use Your Support Network!’

If your boot is weighed down with issues from the past, negative beliefs or habits that aren’t what you want then make one of the most important decisions of your life – to get rid of them. You don’t always need to get professional help as it may be that a loyal friend or loved one can listen to you and help you open that boot and unload.

It may be you just need some quiet space where you can relax and then gain your own insight in to what needs to be done.

However, if you feel you need professional help then there are many qualified, experienced and effective Health Care Therapists and Coach’s available. In finding the right person I recommend you a) check they are experienced and qualified to a high standard and b) have a chat with them on the phone to see if you gel with that person. You will be amazed at how simple the discarding of baggage can be and how quickly in many cases. Working through and releasing ‘old stuff’ can be very liberating and health enhancing.

ACTION 3 - ‘Re-set Your Destination!’

So your car is now lighter, more efficient and able to travel to even better destinations. This is a really good time to reassess where you are in life and where you truly want to head. You may find you have the same destination in mind as before. Now you can get there more easily with a more positive attitude. Or it might be that you discover how much more capability you have as your confidence and self-belief grows.

One Client whom I worked with had allowed fear to stop her flying on planes. She and her partner had a holiday home in France and as a result of her anxiety they had to drive the whole journey every other weekend which was tiring and causing rows between her and her husband. After a couple of coaching sessions and a couple of years later that lady got her own Private Pilots Licence so that she could fly them both to their French home!

There is no end to what humans can achieve when they put their minds to it. Those minds need to be in the right space to do so. Here is wishing you a fantastic journey to your destination.
